Do I Need a Study Visa?

Individuals holding citizenship of a European Union (EU) member state are not required to obtain a study visa in order to enroll in a degree program at the University of Siena. Similarly, applicants classified as EU-equated citizens are, in most cases, also exempt from the study visa requirement.

Conversely, all non-EU citizens residing outside of Italy must obtain a study visa (in Italian: visto per motivi di studio) to enroll in an Italian university program. However, it is important to note that even international students already residing in Italy or in another EU country may still be required to apply for a study visa, depending on the specific conditions of their residence status. These conditions are defined by current national immigration laws and regulations.

While the issuance of visas falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Italian embassies and consulates abroad, and for detailed and up-to-date information applicants must refer to the official authorities, the University of Siena has developed a comprehensive guide to help prospective students determine their applicable status with respect to visa requirements.

Please note that, unless otherwise specified in the regulations of the degree program, it is not necessary to hold a visa in order to submit an admission application. However, if a visa is required, it will be essential for entering Italy and completing the enrollment in the program to which you have been admitted.

The visa application process can only be initiated once the admission procedure has been successfully completed and the candidate has received a Letter of Eligibility for Enrollment issued by the University of Siena.
