A Unique Place to Study and Live
For international students, Siena offers the opportunity to study in a vibrant academic environment while experiencing the traditions, culture, and lifestyle of one of Italy’s most fascinating cities.
A City of History, Art and Architecture

Located in the heart of Tuscany, Siena is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its historic centre, narrow streets, and stunning architecture create a unique atmosphere where history and daily life blend naturally.
Among the most iconic landmarks are the magnificent Siena Cathedral, famous for its striking black-and-white marble decoration, and the monumental Palazzo Pubblico overlooking the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. The elegant Torre del Mangia rises above the square and offers spectacular views of the city and the surrounding Tuscan hills.
The Palio: Siena’s Most Famous Tradition

Twice a year, on July 2 and August 16, the city hosts the spectacular Palio di Siena. This historic horse race takes place in the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo and involves the city’s historic districts, known as contrade. The Palio is far more than a race: it is a powerful expression of Siena’s identity, with parades, traditional costumes, music, and celebrations filling the city.
Music

Siena has a vibrant musical life, particularly during the summer months. The internationally renowned Accademia Musicale Chigiana organizes the Chigiana International Festival, bringing world-class musicians and young talents to the city for concerts and masterclasses.
Another major event is the Siena Jazz International Summer Workshop, one of Europe’s leading jazz education programs. For several weeks each summer, Siena becomes an international meeting point for jazz students and performers.
Throughout the year, the city also hosts chamber concerts, organ recitals, and occasional open-air performances in historic venues.
Exhibitions and Art Spaces

Siena offers a rich cultural program of exhibitions and visual arts. The historic complex of Santa Maria della Scala, one of Europe’s oldest hospitals, is today a major cultural centre hosting art exhibitions, museums and cultural events.
Art lovers can also visit the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, which preserves masterpieces of the Sienese school of painting from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Photography lovers will appreciate the Siena International Photo Awards, one of the leading international photography competitions. Its exhibitions transform historic spaces across Siena into galleries showcasing award-winning images from photographers worldwide.
Sports and Outdoor Events

Siena is also known for international sporting events. One of the most famous is the professional cycling race Strade Bianche, which finishes spectacularly in Piazza del Campo after crossing the iconic white gravel roads of the Tuscan countryside. The race attracts many of the world’s top cyclists and has quickly become one of the most distinctive and visually striking events in international cycling.
The surrounding landscape also offers excellent opportunities for cycling, hiking, and outdoor activities.
