Living Cost

DISCLAIMER: The University of Siena is not responsible for the information provided on this page, which is intended solely to assist students in better understanding the cost of living.

Siena is a smaller city compared to some of the other major cities in Italy, like Rome, Milan and living costs tend to be lower. Furthermore, students have access to several discounted rates and services.

Here’s a general breakdown of some of the monthly living costs for students in Siena:

Rent: Student housing options such as shared apartments or university dormitories are more affordable than regular apartments. The cost of a shared room in a student apartment can range from €300 to €450 per month, while a room in a university dormitory might cost between €200 and €400 per month. Otherwise, the monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center ranges between €600 and €900 (outside the city center: €400 – €700).

Utilities: Utility costs depend on the utility company, lifestyle and consumption. On average, for a small apartment the costs amount to around 100 euros per month. If you live in a shared apartment, utilities may be included in the rent or divided among roommates, reducing the individual cost.

Groceries: Students have access to university canteens, also known as “mensa”. These canteens provide affordable meals offering a variety of meal options, including pasta, main dishes, side dishes, salads, and desserts, also catering to specific dietary needs, such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets. To access the university canteens, students need a special card issued by the canteen service. Meal prices are subsidised and much more affordable than eating out at restaurants. In some cases, the cost of meals can be further reduced for students with lower income or based on financial need. Furthermore, students can save money on groceries by shopping at local markets or discount supermarkets and cooking at home instead of eating out.

Transportation: Students can benefit from discounted public transportation fares applying for a discounted monthly or annual pass, which can help lower transportation costs. The well-preserved historic center of the city is largely pedestrianised, and many of the university buildings can be easily reached on foot.

Leisure and entertainment: Students can often take advantage of discounted rates for movie tickets, museum entry fees, fitness clubs, and other cultural or recreational activities. Additionally, universities usually offer a range of free or low-cost activities and events for students.
